London to Pearson & the airports · 2026-09-21 · 8-minute read
Detroit Metro airport from London, Ontario is a 220-kilometre run of about two and a half hours plus the border: the 401 west to Windsor, the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel into Michigan, and I-75 and I-94 to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) at Romulus, southwest of the city, at a LondonLimo.net planning figure of $420-520 plus HST for a business sedan and $480-580 for an executive SUV. DTW is Delta's hub with every major US and international carrier, and a US domestic fare from it is sometimes half the Pearson price for the same route; every passenger needs a passport or a NEXUS card, the crossing adds twenty minutes to an hour, and the cross-border service page has the documents. The Detroit airport page has the terminals; this article is the run, the crossing and the arithmetic.
The run, stage by stage
The 401 west from London is the flattest, straightest highway in the province, an hour and forty-five minutes to Windsor's edge past Chatham and Tilbury with the wind turbines on both sides; the Herb Gray Parkway carries the highway into the Ambassador Bridge's approach, or the E.C. Row and the downtown streets lead to the tunnel; the US booth on the far side; then I-75 south and I-94 west to the airport's exit at Merriman Road, thirty minutes on a clear afternoon. Two and a half hours from a London driveway to the McNamara Terminal's curb on a good day; three and a quarter on a Friday with a bridge queue.
| Stage | From London | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| London to Windsor's edge, the 401 | 185 km | 1 h 45 | Flat, fast; squalls off Lake St. Clair in winter |
| The Ambassador Bridge or the tunnel | - | 10-60 min | The chauffeur reads the bridge authority's wait times and chooses |
| US Customs and Border Protection booth | - | 5-30 min | Passports or NEXUS; the CBP officer's questions |
| I-75 and I-94 to DTW | 35 km | 30 min | McNamara (Delta, SkyTeam) or Evans (the rest) |
| Total, door to terminal | 220 km | 2 h 30 - 3 h 15 | Sedan $420-520; SUV $480-580; Sprinter $720-860 |

The two terminals
The McNamara Terminal is Delta's and SkyTeam's - Air France, KLM and the rest - with its long concourse and the tram; the Evans Terminal is American, United, Southwest, Spirit and the other carriers. The airport's site says which airline uses which; the chauffeur drops at the airline's departures door and, on the return, meets at the McNamara's international arrivals door or the Evans Terminal's baggage claim with a name board. The Detroit airport page has each in detail.
The documents, without exception
A valid passport for every passenger, or a NEXUS card; a child's passport too; the visa or the ESTA-equivalent that a non-Canadian passenger's nationality requires for the US, checked with the US Customs and Border Protection rules before the day; and nothing in the bags that the US prohibits. The chauffeur carries the vehicle's own documents and cannot carry a passenger without theirs; a passenger refused entry is returned to the Canadian side and the fare is not refunded, as the terms state.

The arithmetic: when Detroit wins
Delta's hub fares from DTW to Atlanta, the Florida cities, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver and the US west are often $200-400 a head below the same routes from Pearson, and on a family of four that is $800-1,600 on the trip against a run that costs $125-175 more each way than Pearson's and takes forty-five minutes longer plus the border; the travel desk runs the door-to-door figure before the flight is booked. Detroit loses when the fare difference is small, when a passenger's documents are in doubt, and on the Friday evenings when the bridge queue is an hour.
The timing rule with the border
Three hours before a US domestic flight and three and a half before an international one, plus the two-and-a-half-hour run, plus the bridge's current wait as the chauffeur reads it, plus a winter margin: a 9 a.m. Delta flight to Atlanta is a 3:00 a.m. pickup from London on a normal day and 2:30 on a Friday or in a squall. The cross-border page has the rule and the crossing's patterns by hour.
The return: Canadian customs from the rear seat
A passenger returning from DTW is met at the terminal, driven to the bridge or the tunnel, and declares to the CBSA officer at the Canadian booth from the car - the passports handed forward, the purchases declared, the questions answered - and the officer may send the vehicle to secondary, which the chauffeur handles as routine. Then the 401 home, two hours from the bridge to a London driveway.
Winter: the 401 west and the bridge in a squall
The 401 west of London takes the squalls off Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair across the flattest land in Ontario, where the drifting is worst; the chauffeur reads the Ontario 511 cameras at Chatham and Tilbury and the desk leaves earlier by rule, on winter tires, in an SUV when the forecast calls for it. The bridge itself is plowed and rarely closes; the tunnel never.
The Detroit day and the game, on the same run
A London family flying from DTW on Monday and seeing the Lions or the Tigers on Sunday, an executive with a Dearborn meeting and a Delta flight after it, a group to a Detroit concert with a flight home from DTW: the Detroit destination page prices the city and the desk combines the legs.
Three Detroit runs, as they went
A family of four to Orlando, March, Delta at 8:10 a.m. An SUV from Byron at 2:15 a.m.; the bridge at 4:05 with no queue; the McNamara curb at 4:50; the flights were $310 a head below Pearson's.
An executive to Los Angeles, Tuesday, Delta at 10:30 a.m. A sedan from downtown at 4:30 a.m.; the tunnel; the curb at 7:15; two hours of work on the 401 and a NEXUS card at the booth.
A couple home from Las Vegas, Sunday 6:40 p.m. at the Evans Terminal. Met at baggage claim; the bridge queue was forty minutes; the CBSA booth ten; home in Old North at 10:50.
Booking it
Enter Detroit airport on the reservation engine with the flight number and every passenger's citizenship in the notes; the fixed rate from any London address appears, and the cross-border page has the document checklist.
Three questions the desk is asked about Detroit
Can a non-Canadian passenger cross with the car? With the documents their nationality requires for the US - a visa or an ESTA - checked before the day; the cross-border page has the checklist and the CBP the rules. What if the bridge queue is an hour? The chauffeur reads the bridge authority's wait times an hour out and takes the tunnel when it is shorter; the desk's pickup time carries a margin for a normal queue, and a Friday evening's hour is why Friday pickups are set earlier. Can the car wait at DTW for a same-day return? Yes - a Detroit day trip with a flight at each end is an hourly booking or two fixed rates, priced by the desk.
The Windsor stop, and the Windsor night
A London family driving to DTW with a night at a Windsor hotel before a 6 a.m. flight, an executive with a Windsor meeting on the way to a Detroit flight, a student collected at the University of Windsor: the Windsor page prices the stop and the travel desk books the hotel; the crossing the next morning from Windsor is fifteen minutes rather than two hours.
The tunnel vs the bridge
The Ambassador Bridge carries the trucks and the 401's through traffic and is the direct road to I-75 and I-94; the tunnel runs from downtown Windsor to downtown Detroit and is shorter for the city but adds fifteen minutes to the airport run through Detroit's streets. The Gordie Howe bridge, opened downriver, is the third option and the chauffeur uses whichever the wait times favour on the day.
The US booth, and what is asked
Citizenship, the purpose of the trip, the length of stay, what is being brought in, and whether everyone in the vehicle is travelling together; the chauffeur declares the vehicle as a commercial passenger vehicle with the passengers' names on the manifest, hands the passports forward, and answers for the vehicle only. A passenger sent to secondary is walked in by the officer and the chauffeur waits; it is routine and adds twenty minutes.
The fare, and what it includes
A planning figure of $420-520 for a sedan, $480-580 for an SUV and $720-860 for a Sprinter, one way, with the chauffeur's time both ways, fuel, the bridge or tunnel toll, the crossing's normal wait, the meet, the ninety-minute international wait on the return and the gratuity inside; the rates page has every class, and border fees where they apply are itemised on the receipt as the terms state.
Booking checklist for a Detroit run
The flight number and the terminal; the London address; every passenger's name and citizenship, and the documents each holds; the bags; a car seat; a Windsor stop or night; the return flight; the account or the card; and a phone number that works in the US for the texts. The reservation engine takes Detroit airport as an address and the notes field the citizenships.
The Detroit airport hotels, for the early flight
The hotels on the airport's grounds and along Merriman Road take a family the night before a 6 a.m. Delta flight, driven down the evening before with the crossing done in daylight; the travel desk books the room, and the desk's honest view is that for a flight before 8 a.m. the Detroit hotel night beats a 1 a.m. departure from London with the border in the dark.
What the airport publishes
Detroit Metro's site has the airlines by terminal, the parking, the security wait estimates and the boards; the desk reads the boards for every meet and the terminal assignment for every drop, and the airport's own advice on arrival times is the floor the desk's rule sits on with the run and the border added.
A worked example: a family of four to Orlando
Pearson's direct at $520 a head; Delta's from DTW at $210 a head via Atlanta; the difference, $1,240 on the family; the run's extra cost, $130 each way for the SUV against Pearson's; the family saved $980 and gained a stop at the Detroit Institute of Arts on the way home. The travel desk ran the numbers and the Detroit destination page had the museum.
